In recent times, not only professionals want to invest in additional certifications such as ITIL Certification, SCRUM Certification etc, but also organizations as they want their staff to be a pack of certified professionals from different disciplines. The reason being, that organizations believe that certified employees have a better chance of speaking a common terminology, improvement in productivity, bring satisfaction to customers and demonstration of superior skills in the workforce.
Among the various certifications sought by professionals and Organizations worldwide, ITIL and Scrum form two of the most important additional investment courses. The word “Scrum” has been coined from the game “rugby” where it points to the working of the team as a unit in order to reach the goal. In Rugby, it means to cover a certain distance as a unit, by passing the ball forward and backward.
History:
Hirotaka Takeuchi and ikujiro Nonaka can be described as the founders or pioneers of Scrum in 1986 for defining it as a “”a flexible, holistic product development strategy where a development team works as a unit to reach a common goal”.
In the beginning of 90’s Ken Schwaber used this strategy in his Company, Advanced Development Methods where as Jeff Sutherland along with John Scumniotales and Jeff McKenna developed a similar kind of strategy in Easel Corporation (In fact, the popular notion is the latter group were the first one to use the word “Scrum” although controversies are abound with many crediting Hirotaka Takeuchi and Ikujiro Nonaka for use of the same.)
Sutherland and Schwaber worked together in order to bring a better infrastructure to Scrum by means of their experiences as well as best practices of the industry.
Although there are numerous histories regarding birth of Scrum, it cannot be denied that as ITIL, Scrum is also a framework of best practices derived over the years in all sorts of organizations.
The main benefit of having a scrum certified professional is that specified work can be completed before the estimated timeline. Before the next sprint, a review is conducted by the team and a clear retrospective will be designed for improvement in all sectors and in every piece.
As in other cases regarding problems of implementation, Scrum framework will be challenging during practical application in an organization. Proper support by the top management with required resources along with new ideas can give way to an improved performance in every department of an organization.
